Abstract

Calcitonin (CT) is a 32-amino-acid, single-chain polypeptide hormone that plays important roles in calcium homeostasis and bone remodeling. Endogenous calcitonin is secreted primarily by the parafollicular cells referred to as the “C” cells. These cells are scattered throughout the thyroid in mammals but constitute a distinct organ, the ultimobranchial body, in submammalian species. The major biological function of calcitonin is to inhibit osteoclast-induced mineral resorption from bone. It regulates serum calcium concentrations by opposing the bone and renal effects of parathyroid hormone and by inhibiting bone resorption, resulting in hypocalcemia, hypophosphatemia, and decreased urinary calcium concentrations.
