Abstract

In this chapter I intend to present an overview of the research and theoretical speculations of those who have sought answers to questions of human aggression. A single chapter allows little more than the opportunity to present an outline of several theoretical positions and to focus on some of the basic data of aggression in areas that have direct implications for sports. As one of several underlying themes in this book, aggression is also highlighted in the upcoming chapters on catharsis and spectatorship. Specific discussions covering the broad range of issues surrounding sports aggression can be found in books by J.H. Goldstein (1983) and M.D. Smith (1983). Other major texts that provide a general treatment of the topic of aggression are those of Bandura (1973), R.A. Baron (1977), Geen (1990), and Zillmann (1979).
