Prostaglandins and the Digestive System

  • Chapter

Abstract

The effects of prostaglandins (PGs) on the digestive system have been extensively studied, in part because they were found to be present in the gastrointestinal tract in large amounts [the human gastric mucosa contains 1 μg per gram of wet tissue of PGE2 (Bennett et al., 1968c)] and in part because they tend to stimulate intestinal smooth muscle in vitro. As is generally the case for other organs, PGs are synthesized within the gastrointestinal tract (Bartels et al., 1970; Bennett et al., 1967, 1968c; Coceani et al., 1967; Miyazaki, l96Sa, b, 1969; Pace-Asciak et al., 1968; Wolfe et al., 1967) and seem to exert their activity locally, at the site where they are produced. This chapter summarizes the main findings on the effects of PGs on the digestive system. Several reviews have already appeared on this subject (Bennett, 1972; Main, 1973; Matuchansky and Bernier, 1973c; Waller, 1973; Wilson, 1974).
