Abstract
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is an important determinant of success following organ allografting. Exposure to an infection with CMV is common in normal persons, with the age-specific prevalence of antibody to CMV exceeding 50% by adulthood in most parts of the world (Wentworth and Alexander, 1971). In the normal host and especially in children, infection with CMV is often asymptomatic, although it may be the cause of atypical mononucleosis syndrome during adolescence and early adulthood (Klemola and Kaariainen, 1965). Uncommonly, it is the cause of more serious illnesses such as pneumonia, encephalitis, or Guillain-Barre syndrome. With the exception of congenital CMV infection, however, CMV is rarely the cause of severe disease in immunologically normal persons.
