Abstract
It is evident that some sort of hierarchical principle is reflected in the organization of this book, which begins with considerations of discourse and dialogue as a whole and ends up with chapters on the internal structure of predications and possible levels of organization lower than that. The purpose of this chapter is two-fold: to make this hierarchical principle explicit and to relate it to the surface structure of discourse; along with this, to expound a contemporary view of tagmemics as a framework for the study of discourse. More about the latter consideration first.
