The Principles of X-Ray Absorption Spectroscopy

  • Chapter
Synchrotron Radiation Research

Abstract

The advent of very broad-band highly collimated intense photon beams from high-energy electron storage rings may be reasonably claimed to have revolutionized the applications of photon absorption spectroscopy in the soft-to-intermediate x-ray energy regime. These applications have been found to have considerable usefulness in a wide variety of fields of science owing to the richness of chemical and structural information which may be obtained on analysis of the spectroscopic data. Using synchrotron radiation sources, these spectra may be taken on a time scale of seconds to hours compared to many days of data taking to produce a single spectrum needed with a conventional x-ray tube source.
