  • Chapter
Surgical Anatomy and Technique

Abstract

The large intestine, or colon, about 150 cm long, extends from the terminal ileum to the rectum. The classic divisions are the cecum, colon proper, rectum, and anal canal. The cecum, the first 6 cm of the large bowel just below the ileocolic valve, together with the ascending and hepatic flexures, forms a surgical unit, the right colon.
