Abstract

We consider a rectangular grillage of horizontal prismatic beams that are parallel to the sides of the rectangle. The beams are to consist of a given, rigid, perfectly plastic material with tensile and compressive yield limits ± σo.The total volume of the beams is to be minimized subject to the behavioral constraint that the grillage is to be on the verge of plastic collapse under the given uniformly distributed vertical load p.
