Abstract

The concept of stress refers, since Selye and Cannon, etc., to the psychophysiological reaction of an individual who is trying to defend himself against some kind of noxious stimulus and to find means for modifying this stimulus or for adapting his response to it. For many people, some social situations are perceived as being noxious, for instance in meeting strangers or being criticized. It is in this sense that we can conceive the more limited concept of social stress. The term refers to a whole set of psychophysiological, physical and cognitive reactions to situations requiring interpersonal interactions.
