Abstract

Concern about environmental/occupational exposure to DNA-damaging agents has led to widespread interest in establishing reliable methods to monitor potentially exposed people. Measurement of damage to chromosomes in blood lymphocytes is one of the few monitoring methods available and can be a useful biological dosimeter. Although the health risks associated with chromosome damage are not known, it is possible that exposure to DNA-damaging agents may increase the occurrence of cancer and of heritable genetic changes in the population.
