Abstract
AICAriboside (5-amino-4-imidazolecarboxamide riboside, Z-riboside) is the nucleoside corresponding to AICAribotide (AICAR or ZMP), an intermediate of the “de novo” biosynthesis of purines. AICAriboside is taken up and metabolized by various mammalian tissues, in which it is converted into ZMP by adenosine kinase (1,2). Development of AICAriboside for the treatment of human cardiovascular disease (3) led to the observation of reduction of blood glucose following large infusion (4). Investigations of the effects of AICAriboside on liver were therefore undertaken.
