Abstract
A long search for the essence of probability has culminated in a powerful and useful modern theory, which is highly sophisticated yet conceptually simple. As a mathematical discipline, probability theory is increasingly abstract in its formal expression, yet it is remarkably useful as a practical model for an extraordinary range of applied problems. This system has provided the basis for modeling in a growing array of applications in which the central notion is choice and decision under uncertainty.
