Abstract

In Chapter 7, mapping properties of a random variable X are used to effect a transfer of probability mass from the basic space Ω to the real line 5ft. The resultant probability distribution induced by X assigns to each Borel set M a mass equal to the probability that X takes a value in that set. The distribution induced by a discrete random variable X is easy to visualize since it concentrates probability mass at each value in the range of X.
