Abstract

A recent article in the New York State Journal of Medicine indicated that many physicians had problems in the diagnosis and management of alcoholics (Douglas, 1976). The author suggested that Alcoholics Anonymous was the only effective treatment for alcoholics. Most professionals in the field of alcoholism consider AA an effective method of treatment for many, but by no means all, alcoholics. The experience has been that a variety of treatment approaches, often including AA, is needed for the various subpopulations of alcoholics that are to be found in a community (Zimberg, 1975).
