Abstract

This paper examines, in turn, the influence of a number of oceanographic and ecologic factors on the control of phytoplankton production and biomass in estuarine and coastal environments, with particular attention to studies conducted in the St. Lawrence Estuary. These factors are then invoked to explain the differences between the known subregions of the St. Lawrence ecosystem, which have been defined principally on the basis of phytoplankton biomass and primary production criteria.
