Chemical Contaminants in the St. Lawrence Estuary and Saguenay Fjord

Oceanography of a Large-Scale Estuarine System

Part of the book series: Coastal and Estuarine Studies ((COASTAL,volume 39))

Abstract

Metallic (mercury, cadmium, lead, zinc, etc.) and organic (PCB, Mirex, PAH, etc.) contaminants of the St. Lawrence Estuary and of its main tributary, the Saguenay Fjord, are assessed by examining data on water, suspended particles, sediments and biota. Past and present contamination levels and fluxes in various biogeochemical reservoirs are given. Sources are explored.

After a serious mercury contamination problem, mainly due to chloralkali plants, a large decrease of mercury inputs from liquid effluents has occurred in the St. Lawrence Basin. At the present time the remaining mercury inputs to these waters from anthropogenic sources originate from the atmosphere and sediments. Studies on sediments also show the presence of significant fractions of other metals of anthropogenic origin (e.g. Pb). However, their concentrations do not attain levels considered hazardous for marine life. Organic contaminants constitute a more worrying problem for marine life in the Estuary and Saguenay Fjord. High concentrations of PCBs and PAHs have been measured in different compartments of the St. Lawrence ecosystem and sediments. Such compounds have been suggested to be responsible for diseases or disorders observed in marine mammals living in the area.
