Abstract

To gain a better understanding of DNA replication in general, we are interested in the interactions between host and phage functions in phage growth. It has been tacitly assumed that DNA replication of bacteriophage T4 is independent of host functions, since T4 codes for several functions that are essential for DNA replication (Epstein et al., 1963) and since T4 produces progeny in all mutant hosts that are defective in their own DNA replication (for review, see Gross, 1972 and Alberts, this Symposium). However, we must keep in mind that the tested mutant hosts do not lack the respective proteins, but rather produce altered proteins. Any such protein, though temperature sensitive in replication of bacterial DNA, may still be capable of interacting with components of the T4 replicating apparatus.
