Role of Simulations in Future Magnetospheric Programs

Abstract

In this paper an attempt is made to assess the impact of simulations on space plasma research. Examples where simulations have been a successful complement to observations and analytical theory are presented. Some current research where simulation techniques are stressed up to and beyond their capabilities are discussed. The major challenges we face in advancing simulation techniques are outlined. Finally, it is argued that even with current techniques, “mission oriented” simulations can have a major influence on upcoming future missions.
