Abstract

Grand Unified Theories (GUTs)1,2 of strong, weak and electromagnetic interactions predict the existence of superheavy magnetic monopeles.3,4 The exact value of the mass of these monoles, their production rate in the early universe, their subsequent history and their abundance at present depend on the apcific GUT medel we adopt as well as on some astrophysical details. But the existence of magnetic monopoles is the most mineral consequence of the very idea of Grand Unification, As soon as we embed U(1)em into a simple grand unifying gauge group G, we are bound to have magnetic monopoles.
