Abstract

There is a large and impressive body of evidence to suggest that the initial event in polypeptide-hormone- and catecholamine-mediated cellular actions is the specific interaction of the hormone with recognition sites, i.e., receptors on the cell surface. Although the complex scheme of biochemical events ultimately seen in response to hormone administration may be affected by alterations at different points in the metabolic pathways involved, the binding of the hormone is prerequisite to all subsequent biological phenomena. Thus, the understanding of this key interaction assumes great importance. That it is of great importance becomes especially true in light of evidence that in some instances, the receptor itself, by alterations of affinity and concentration, may be an important determinant of the sensitivity of a cell to the action of hormones (Roth et al., 1975).
