Abstract

“Lymphokines”* (LKs) is the common denotation suggested by Dumonde et al. (1969) for a loosely related group of soluble materials that are liberated by lymphoid cells cultured in vitro and usually recovered from the cell-free culture fluid. They were originally discovered in supernatants of lymphocytes obtained from immunized animals that were cultured in the presence of specific antigen, and subsequently under conditions of nonspecific lymphocyte stimulation by membrane-reactive agents such as plant lectins, antibodies reacting with surface components, and certain bacterial products. It later became apparent that LK-like materials are also produced, under certain conditions, by cells other than lymphocytes. The methods used for the detection and quantitation of LKs are biological, and are based on the ability of a culture supernatant to inhibit the migration of macrophages or polymorphonuclear leukocytes in vitro, to act as a chemotactic attractant for a variety of cells, to be cytotoxic for certain target cells, to induce lymphocyte proliferation, to inhibit virus multiplication, and other properties.
