The Role of the Mother-Infant Interaction in Nutritional Disorders

  • Chapter
Nutrition and Behavior

Abstract

Recent efforts to identify the various pathways or mechanisms through which nutritional variations might influence behavioral development have focused on the role of early mother-infant interaction in causing or contributing to infantile mulnutrition. By the term mother-infant interaction, we refer to the pattern of behavior engaged in by the mother (or other primary caregiver) and the infant as they relate to each other over time. It is particularly important to examine both the mother’s behavior toward the infant and the infant’s behavior toward the mother, since each may influence the response of the other (Bell, 1974).
