Behavioral Consequences of Malnutrition in Early Life

  • Chapter
Nutrition and Behavior

Abstract

A large number of studies have focused on the link between malnutrition and behavior. The long-term consequences of early malnutrition are now receiving increasing attention as better public health measures and medical care ensure the survival of many children with childhood malnutrition who would previously have succumbed. The vast majority of these studies have examined the behavioral outcomes of children with severe malnutrition, who are the most easily identified group within the much larger population of children suffering from milder forms of malnutrition. In addition, children with severe forms are more likely to demonstrate aberrant behavioral outcomes than are the milder cases. Those who are less severely malnourished are also likely to be disadvantaged, but the long-term effects in this population remain more difficult to identify by current methodologies.
