Abstract

Self-incompatibility is a term which describes the mechanisms which have evolved in many families of flowering plants to prevent self-mating and hence inbreeding. As the male and female sexual organs, the anthers and the pistil, are often arranged on the same plant in close physical proximity, the potential for self-mating, in the absence of specific mechanisms for its prevention, is high. A formal definition of self-incompatibility is given by Lundquist (1), “the inability of female hermaphrodite seed plants to produce zygotes after self-pollination”.
