Abstract

Magnetism has a very ancient history: lodestone, a naturally-occurring permanent magnet, was known as early as 800 BC. Lodestones were of vital importance to navigation for making compasses, described by Alexander Neckam, an Englishman, in about AD 1200. William Gilbert’s De Magnete, published in 1600, began the scientific study of magnetism which languished until the rapid succession of discoveries in the 19th century, starting with Oersted’s observation of the magnetic field of an electric current in 1820. In this chapter we shall briefly describe the principal kinds of magnetic ordering to be found in solids and shall then go on to consider in more detail the phenomena that are most relevant to electrical engineering
