Abstract

The effect of controlling any or all of the influenças known to favour the development of ischaemic heart disease (IHD) can only be tested by establishing well-designed large scale clinical trials. There are two complementary approaches. One is to show that a particular regime will reduce morbidity and prolong life in patients who already have features of IHD — secondary prevention trials. The other is to prove that it is possible to prevent at least a proportion of high risk individuals from developing HID -primary prevention trials.
