Abstract
Although diagnostic interviewing of individuals experiencing emotional and behavioral pathology inevitably requires sophistication and attention to detail on the part of the interviewer, there are particular problems that the clinician dealing with alcohol abusing patients must face. Various present-day conceptualizations regarding the very nature of alcoholism raise questions about the validity of the conceptual framework used in the evaluative schema. Similarly, the existence of a variety of classification procedures, which are in some respects related to the aforestated conceptualizations, also bear on the validity matter. And then there are the numerous manipulations and strategies exhibited by many alcohol-abusing individuals as they either submit to or resist the collection of credible evaluative data. This chapter provides a perspective on the special problems that must be addressed and overcome if the diagnostic interviewing of alcoholic patients is to result in a valid outcome, thus setting the stage for a reasonable prospect of therapeutic success.
