Abstract
Between 0.23% and 0.47% of the total population of the United States (or between 500,000 and 1 million people) is likely to receive psychiatric treatment for a schizophrenic illness during any year. Sixty-two percent of these will be hospitalized for this condition during that year. In addition, about 1% of the persons in the U.S. population will develop schizophrenia during their lifetime (Babigian, 1980).
