Abstract
Psychophysiological disorders bring many clients to their first interaction with mental health professionals—the diagnostic interview. More than for any subsequent interaction, the client is filled with trepidation, worrying about being labeled crazy, thereby forfeiting rights to serious medical evaluation in the future. The novice mental health professional may be filled with concern over blundering in front of a new client, and there is the potential of misdiagnosing the problem. The experienced mental health professional, however, often finds it a rewarding experience; sensitive detective work, deductive reasoning skills, and hypothesis testing can fit pieces of a complex puzzle into a comprehensive pattern.
