Diagnostic Interviewing

Abstract

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-III) (American Psychiatric Association, 1980) includes four disturbances under the heading “Eating Disorders.” They are anorexia nervosa, bulimia, rumination, and pica. The maladaptive eating that lead some to obesity was not included because obesity “is not generally associated with any distinct psychological or behavioral syndrome” (p. 67). However, our research and clinical observations have suggested that many afflicted with obesity have serious problems of eating. Therefore, it is included in this chapter as a major area for discussion.
