Abstract
Previous measurements, e.g. Kromp et al.1, Bornhauser2, have shown that the fracture behaviour of alumina with 3 wt% glassy phase is of non linear elastic type at temperatures above 900°C. The measured fracture toughness KIC or the subcritical KI data heavily depend on test temperature as well as on the crack velocity. Difficulties appear with the physical interpretation as the relationship between the stress intensity KI and the crack velocity a is not clear.
