Abstract
Physicians have been puzzled for years about the mechanism of prolonged chest pain with ischemic type changes of the ST segment in the ECG at the time of the pain. Often weakness and, sometimes, perspiration are associated, the entire picture suggesting myocardial infarction but this not being supported by the subsequent course, such as rise in enzyme levels or evolutionary changes of classic infarction in the ECG. In recent years, the term intermediate syndrome has been applied. Previously, the condition has had various labels, two of which were coronary failure and coronary insufficiency.
