Formation of Polymeric Materials by a Nonpolymerization Process: Glow Discharge Polymerization

  • Chapter
Contemporary Topics in Polymer Science

Abstract

Recognition of the formation of polymeric materials in a plasma state (1874) precedes the establishment of the concept of “polymer”. In early observations, polymeric materials were recognized as undesirable by-products associated with electric discharge. In recent years, this phenomenon has been accepted as a potentially important process of coating or polymerization, and today the research that has evolved encompasses a host of applications and fundamental aspects. The process is generally referred to as “glow discharge polymerization” or “plasma polymerization”.
