Acetylene Containing Aromatic Heterocyclic Polymers

  • Chapter
Contemporary Topics in Polymer Science

Synopsis

Work in our laboratory has been concerned with the use of acetylene chemistry to aid the processing of aromatic heterocyclic polymers. Acetylene terminated heterocyclic oligomers homopolymerize by both inter- and intramolecular addition reactions leading to fused aromatic ring systems which exhibit thermal and thermo-oxidative stabilities comparable with the heterocyclic backbone structures. The use of pendant acetylene groups has demonstrated the potential of a new curing mechanism providing a means to tougher resins with use temperatures far exceeding processing temperatures. This paper will review the synthesis and characterization of these materials as well as some already determined mechanical properties as composites and adhesives.
