Alcoholism

Psychopathology, Etiology, and Treatment

  • Chapter
Comprehensive Handbook of Psychopathology

Abstract

Before beginning our consideration of the psychopathology, the etiology, and the treatment of the alcoholism disorders, it is well to review briefly their rapidly evolving status in the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), the “official” nomenclature of the United States. A review of the nosological treatment that the alcoholism disorders have received at the hands of the drafters of successive editions of the DSM is fascinating for the insight it provides into public and professional views on alcoholism during the 28 years separating the first and the third (and latest) editions of the work.
