Abstract

Pleural effusion is a frequent complication in the course of disseminated neoplastic disease, and its development poses a variety of important problems in management. Its occurrence, while a manifestation of systemic disease, does not bear a relationship to prognosis, except perhaps in malignant lymphoma. While removal may be necessary for symptomatic relief, repeated thoracentesis may have significant complications. For this reason, ideal treatment should prevent fluid accumulation.
