Abstract

Natural rubber latex has been used in many different ways throughout history; therefore it has been regarded as a generally safe and nearly inert material. This perception changed radically in the late 1980s with the increasing awareness that latex—or, more accurately, naturally occurring proteins within latex—could cause IgE-mediated allergic reactions. Such reactions range from mild itching of the skin to fatal anaphylaxis [1,2].
