Agricultural uses of hydrocolloids

  • Chapter
Hydrocolloid Applications

Abstract

The release of agricultural chemicals (including pesticides) can be controlled by the use of polymers. These polymers control the rate of delivery, the mobility and the length of time for which the component is considered effective. The greatest advantage of controlled-release formulations is that less chemical is used during a given time interval, thereby lowering its impact on non-target species and limiting leaching, volatilization and degradation (Kydonieus, 1980).
