Abstract

Since their emergence six years ago, management platforms have been heralded as the solution to all the shortcomings of proprietary, stand-alone, equipment specific element management systems. At the present time, expectations are just as high. To fully achieve their intended purpose, management platforms should have capabilities such as openness, object-oriented information models, well integrated platform applications, fully distributed applications and databases, solid and user-friendly application development tools, support for management of client/server environments, and common management information repositories. In the current state of implementation, all these capabilities are not yet provided.
