The System M/G/1; Priority Systems

Abstract

This chapter is concerned with single server systems with Poisson arrivals. In Sections 7.2-7.6 we investigate the system where the service times have a general distribution and the queue discipline is first come, first served (M/G/1). The special cases of exponential and Erlangian service times were studied in Chapters 2-4, where the queue length process was analyzed first, and the waiting time distribution was then derived in terms of the queue length. In the general case we reverse this procedure, because it turns out that the waiting time process is Markovian, while the queue length process is not.
