Marketplace Factors

In Chapter 2, we learned that data compression is the enabling technology for many highly visible applications and services. We also learned of the increasing importance of digital systems that offer high information bandwidth, provide interactive multimedia capability, and are widely connected. This chapter looks at a marketplace in which several industries and the products and services they offer are caught up in the transition to digital data. The factors affecting this activity and exerting important influences on data compression technology are shown in Figure 3.1.
