In Part III of this book, we discovered that many applications and digital systems take advantage of data compression, be it for storage savings, bandwidth reduction, or transmission time savings. Incorporating data compression in a digital system requires careful design to assure it will provide the intended benefits and operate harmoniously with other system functions. In this chapter, we introduce decisions that designers face when choosing to integrate data compression in their digital systems.
