Cyclic Service Influence

  • Chapter
High Pressure Vessels

Abstract

Paragraph 1.4 introduced the term factor of safety and alluded to the difficulty of establishing a single parameter applicable to all conditions. In the United States, the advent of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) made many people very conscious of this term, and unfortunately, it has become overused, underdefined, and misunderstood in its application to high pressure equipment. This chapter attempts to sort out some of this confusion. Similar confusion occurs between the terms design cycles and cyclic life, which also are discussed in this chapter.
