Contact Stresses at Interface Between a Stiff Foundation Block and Foundation Soil: Large-Scale Model Tests

Abstract

Large-scale model tests that study the contact stresses at the interface of a stiff foundation block and bearing soil are discussed in detail by Lazebnik and Smirnov (1964), Lazebnik et al. (1966), and Lazebnik (1966). The contact stresses were investigated using stiff concrete blocks of various shapes, e.g., round slabs having diameters 1.1 m and 2.2 m and a rectangular block 3 × 1 m in plan. This investigation was preceded by a series of preliminary experiments aimed at developing the proper investigation procedures and selecting the proper pressure measuring instruments. In these preliminary experiments a reinforced concrete block 1.8 × 0.6 m, and 0.7 m deep, was tested on foundation soils represented by sand and loam. Loads up to 0.4 MPa were applied by means of a hydraulic jack in increments of 0.1 MPa for sand and 0.05 MPa for loam. Each test consisted of two subsequent loading cycles. The contact soil pressure was measured by means of instruments having pressure measuring systems, e.g., bonded wire strain gages and vibrating wire transducers.
