Errors in Measuring Soil Contact Pressures by Means of Nonstiff Pressure Cells

Abstract

In this work nonstiff soil pressure measuring cells are defined as those that are less stiff than concrete, and the “error” in the measuring of soil pressures is defined as the deviation between the measured and the true value of the soil pressure. Thus, mathematically the error can also be interpreted as the accuracy of the soil pressure measurements. In previous chapters it has been shown that the stiffness of the soil pressure measuring cells greatly affects the instrument’s reading. It has also been illustrated that when the instrument stiffness is close or equal to that of concrete (e.g., soil pressure cells with hydraulic multiplicators) the error in soil pressure measurement is minimal, provided the founding or backfill soils are homogeneous and uniform.
