Abstract

The results of numerous investigations conducted in the past 30 to 40 years indicate that stress distribution by soils is much less pronounced than that obtained from calculations based on the theory of elastic soil/structure interaction, e.g., the Boussinesq solution. Some investigators, however, arrived at exactly the opposite conclusions (Turnbull et al. 1961; Abramov et al. 1968).
