Perception for Decision or Decision for Perception?

  • Chapter

Abstract

The paper addresses the duality problem between decision and perception. Based on simple examples, we discuss four major problems to solve for systems to reach some autonomy:

  • viable and robust acquisition through sensor association,

  • efficient data processing to information extracting,

  • acquisition and processing systems management towards actions,

  • injection of models for prediction.

At each stage few sensible techniques and technologies are outlined, illustrating plausible solutions. We first elaborate on reasons for sensor fusion together with definitions, putting the stress on the emergence of control (i.e. decision). Second, sensor and processing multiplications are tackled, leading to a primary feature analysis that is a first attempt towards system control. Third we consider the fusion itself under the angle of its architecture and the way to embed decision techniques into a coherent actable device. The conclusion is on models and generic decisions.
