Abstract

The importance of toilet training in the lives of parents and children is difficult to overestimate. To parents, it is a major step in their child’s progress toward independence, and has come to represent not only their own effectiveness as parents but also the intellectual and emotional health of their child. To children, toilet training is the first major developmental challenge they face that is more important to others than to them. Suddenly, they discover that their ability to control what were once involuntary processes is a matter of extreme social significance, and that failures in this regard merit the displeasure of parents and peers alike. When failures occur, then, the interactive consequences in terms of family functioning and the child’s adjustment can be far-reaching (Walker, 1995).
