Abstract
Hair cells are the typical mechanoreceptors of sensory organs of the acoustico-lateralis system. They operate the conversion of natural stimuli, such as water flow, sound waves and linear and angular accelerations into a bioelectrical signal. Each hair cell is a multipurpose device whose apex acts as a transducer and whose basal pole is specialized for the secretion of the synaptic transmitter. These functions depend on the complement of ionic channels located in discrete areas of the cell.
