Abstract

A Field Reversed Configuration (FRC) is an elongated toroidal plasma having no material object linking the hole in the torus (i.e., an elongated compact toroid) and having ideally no toroidal field(1). The plasma is confined within a separatrix by poloidal magnetic field. This field is generated by plasma diamagnetic currents that flow exclusively in the toroidal direction. Externally imposed vacuum magnetic flux insulates the FRC from the chamber walls.
